From climate change issues to real solutions: Here’s our quarterly check-in
The second quarter of 2023 was as busy as ever at Made of Air. We launched new educational content about climate issues - because sometimes creating awareness is as important as creating new materials. We also welcomed our new chair of the board - shout-out to Avra! Our CEO Allison participated in The Klosters Forum in Switzerland, where she discussed pressing environmental challenges with global thought leaders. Our team also (net)-zeroed in on abatement curves and worked with our customers to help them lower Scope 3 emissions.
New educational content about climate issues
Reversing climate change is our mission, and this mission isn’t only about creating fillers and materials. We also have to educate people about what has to be done and what they themselves can do about climate. That’s why we launched our new series: Climate Crash Course. We will tackle very complex climate topics and break them down into simplified discussions. Check out our first episode on YouTube:
We’re also launching a new podcast soon, as our dedicated space for diving deeper into climate topics. In our first episode, we jump into the history and “why” of plastics - stay tuned!
We have a new chair of the board
We already shared this exciting news, but it’s worthy of mentioning again in our Quarterly check-in: Avra van der Zee, the COO of Elemental Excelerator, is our new chair of the board. We’re super excited to have her onboard - pun intended. If you’d like to learn more about why this step is so important to us, go over to our YouTube channel, where you can find a Q&A video between Avra and our CEO, Allison.
We went to The Klosters Forum in Switzerland
In June, Allison had the opportunity to participate in The Klosters Forum in Switzerland. The forum is a place “where global thought-leaders and change-makers come together to tackle some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.” Allison was part of a small group of people laser-focused on climate issues and the built environment. Among other things, they talked about planetary boundaries, systems change versus climate change, and donut economics.
“As somebody who's working in a company that I consider to be on the frontline in mitigating actual emissions with companies, I found these conversations incredibly interesting,” said Allison after the event. She also highlighted that “I'm very optimistic about the work to be done, but it is a significant amount of work to be done.” We’re certainly ready to work on these issues!
Corporate abatement curves & emissions mitigation
It’s fair to say our second quarter of 2023 was all about abatement curves and working with companies to help them lower their Scope 3 emissions. Organizations build out abatement curves to graph the relative cost and impact of different decarbonization technologies that they have access to. By comparing price and impact, they can see which solutions are feasible for them if they opt for changing their incumbent materials. These curves are very important for companies: they’re quasi-roadmaps on how they're going to lower their Scope 3 materials emissions. It shows what choices they have and what it's going to cost them to make these changes.
Made of Air sits at an important sweet spot upon these abatement curves. Most companies we work with use plastics; and within plastics, they don't have a lot of options to lower their emissions. A lot of them are working with virgin fossil plastics, and their options are to either move to bioplastic or recycled plastic. Companies opting for recycled plastics are able to mitigate 48% of emissions related to those materials. And while that’s quite a figure, 48% is only halfway to a Net-zero economy. By using Made of Air’s filler technology, they can actually get to Net-zero. Our fillers are a low-cost, low-barrier solution that companies already use to move toward more sustainable production.
We’re excited to continue these conversations with more and more companies the rest of the year, and see what they can achieve with our technology.
