HexAudi: A beautiful testament to sustainability
The built environment accounts for almost 40% of annual global CO2 emissions, with 10% coming alone from building materials. A true net-zero and a circular economy requires rapid decarbonization of the sector and Audi’s car dealership in Trudering, Bavaria, Germany, is a showcase of how this can be done.
This radical change is no longer voluntary; regulations are changing worldwide. HexAudi panels were born out of this necessity when Audi needed to look for substitute material for their typically aluminum clad façades in order to obtain planning permission within a stringent environmental regulatory framework.
Audi went a step further and sought a carbon-negative alternative. Made of Air’s façade panels achieved just that. The brief was to create exteriors that met these new regulations while sustaining Audi’s high-end and branded design; excelling in product and as environmental standards.
Made of Air’s product created through a waste-to-value process is a combination of functionalized biochar, made from wood waste, and formed into durable, carbon-negative thermoplastic.
Not only did these unique and durable panels permanently sequester CO2 at a rate of -1.95kg CO2e / kg, but their installed price was in parity with incumbent materials and installation techniques they were used to.
